Act 3: Resolution

When they met Bart held on to Sasha. Palaven urged him to let them go. After exchanging a few words he let Sasha go to Palaven, only to shoot her in the back with a crossbow. She eventually died in Palaven’s arms. Palaven begged Bart to see the error in his ways and that he had just killed an innocent person for a crime he had committed. He asked that Bart open his eyes and not to be dependent on other’s ideals and to think for himself. Bart was hesitant in resisting and Palaven was close to reaching him, however Bart resolved that he answered for his crimes, nonetheless. After a heated battle between Master and Student, Palaven finally let up his guard and allowed Bart to strike him down. As the stroke fell, Bart’s eyes opened and he dropped his sword. He held Palaven in his arms and broke out in tears asking why he had betrayed him and the Order.

Palaven said that he had finally seen what the Order had done to him and wanted to be free. He forgave Bart on the spot for killing them both and said that he was content with losing his life over an experience that was worth all the trouble. Bart was still shaky but finally understood why Palaven was doing what he did, and eventually accepted death because of it. No one knows what happened to Bartholomew after that night, but the young Templar never came back to the Order. His body was never found amongst the dead either that night.

Act 2: Conflict

On the journey home, she pressed him on several matters concerning the Order and they were striking a nerve with him. But along the way, she got passed his bravado and forced Palaven to second guess his beliefs. Doing this he had already broken the law of Absolution and Resolve. His mind was in torment. They made love one night, and on that night an Executor for the Order tried to kill them both but Palaven cut him down. He had now broken the very Code he lived by.

Hearing of this atrocity Bartholomew was deeply enraged. He had been betrayed on a personal level but on a professional level. He began to question whether or not the teachings of his mentor were all just a gag. Nonetheless he quickly gathered a small force of Paladins. Under his leadership he began his hunt for Palaven. Using all the knowledge he had been taught Bartholomew was successful in finding their hideaway while Palaven was out foraging. He left a note for Palaven demanding he meet him somewhere alone.

Act 1: Setup

Throughout his winded life serving as a Paladin of the Order of the Golden Cross, Palaven has remained firm in his beliefs and ideals. He had always enforced and upheld the Code of the Cross no matter what the situation. Whether or not it was the right thing to do or not, he always lived by a very strict mantra. “The Code is Mine, and Mine is the Code.” The code was simply put the 4 laws those of the Order followed.

Loyalty: “Those of the Order must not aggress against his own and must follow their own.” (The Order)
Absolution: “The words of the Order are decree, law and unquestionable.”
Resolve:  “You must not show hesitation in upholding the Code.”
Virility: “Intimacy with a woman; bearing a child – are not permitted under any circumstance.”

Though Palaven is a seasoned warrior at 42, he has chosen to remain as a Paladin. Templar’s of the Order often had a hand in secular politics in the Kingdom, and of course influenced the government heavily. He had no interest in these things. He was perfectly fine upholding the ideologies of the Order and upholding the code. Meanwhile, his apprentice, the son of his dear friend who died in battle enlisted in the Order and was quickly gaining attention. He was adept with a sword and very cunning. At the young age of 26, Bartholomew was granted the title of Templar after he had succeeded in several high profile quests for the Order; including the annihilation of the opposing “Brothers of Thorn.” Palaven, still a Paladin, was still regarded as the most revered Knight of the Order. The Order was contracted to rescue a Nobleman’s daughter from remnants of the Thorn. As he succeeded in retrieving her, she began to have quite an effect on him. In addition to her beauty, Palaven was taken by her independent but playful nature.
