When they met Bart held on to Sasha. Palaven urged him to let them go. After exchanging a few words he let Sasha go to Palaven, only to shoot her in the back with a crossbow. She eventually died in Palaven’s arms. Palaven begged Bart to see the error in his ways and that he had just killed an innocent person for a crime he had committed. He asked that Bart open his eyes and not to be dependent on other’s ideals and to think for himself. Bart was hesitant in resisting and Palaven was close to reaching him, however Bart resolved that he answered for his crimes, nonetheless. After a heated battle between Master and Student, Palaven finally let up his guard and allowed Bart to strike him down. As the stroke fell, Bart’s eyes opened and he dropped his sword. He held Palaven in his arms and broke out in tears asking why he had betrayed him and the Order.
Palaven said that he had finally seen what the Order had done to him and wanted to be free. He forgave Bart on the spot for killing them both and said that he was content with losing his life over an experience that was worth all the trouble. Bart was still shaky but finally understood why Palaven was doing what he did, and eventually accepted death because of it. No one knows what happened to Bartholomew after that night, but the young Templar never came back to the Order. His body was never found amongst the dead either that night.
